Composition:
Precipitated Sulfur USP 10% W/W
Mineral Oil USP 10% W/W
White Ointment USP 80% W/W
Precipitated form of sulphur is used in the treatment of scabies. The scabicidal effect is probably due to its conversion into hydrogen sulfide and parathionic acid. In addition to its use in scabies, sulfur is also employed in the treatment of other chronic skin conditions like psoriasis, seborrhea, ringworm and lupus erythematosus. Sulfur ointment contains 10 percent (2.5% in children) of sulfur in a simple ointment base. The ointment is to be rubbed on the affected area of the skin.
Contra Indications:
Hypersensitivity to sulfur.
Precautions:
Because of its irritant nature sulfur ointment should not be applied over the face. It stains the clothes and has a peculiar smell. Sulfur needs repeated applications to be effective in the treatment of scabies.
Storage:
Store in a well closed container and avoid prolonged exposure to excessive heat.
Keep medicines out of reach of children.
