Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic comprising gram-positive and gram-negative cocci and bacilli,spirochetes (treponemes and leptospires), rickettsies, chlamydae,mycoplasms and antinomycetes.tt easUy diffuses In to all the tissues and fluids of the organisms.

Indications;
1.Bacterial conjunctivttis (due to pneumococci,strephylococci,streptococci,
gonococci.Morax bacillus and koch-weeks bacillus etc.). Chloramphenicol does not have any action or the agent responsible for conjunctivitis or viral keratoconjunctivitis, but combats the bacterial over infection,
sometimes very pronounced in these cases, and thus distances grave complications.
2. Bacterial keratitis, tn the case of intracofneal aboesses or keratitis msacea one can combine a systemic treatment to the local therapy.
Contra-lndlcatlons:
The use of Chloramphenicol is contra-indicated in persons having previous history of
hypersensitivity to CMoramphenicol ailments which can conceal a hemopathy or whrch require a prolonged treatment forbkJding the use of the drops.
Chloramphenicol shoukJ not be used in minor infections nor as a prophylactic agent against bacterial infection.
Precautions:
Intensive, prolonged or intemittent course of treatments are to be avoided.
Do not combine Chloramphenicol neither with sulphamides nor with any other product susceptible to depressing the bone marrow,
Administration and posoiogy:
Two drops two to three times dailyJts prolonged action allows the prevention of night
applicatonsThe healthy eye will be treated prophylactically In the same manner as the sick
eye.
Secondary Effects:
Chlorarnptiencol is generally well tolerated,
Rarely, a local tneatmenl of Chloramphenicol can provoke hypoplasia or hematopoietic aplasia (aplastic anemia, hypoplastic anemia, granulocytopenia, thrombocytopenia) sometimes irreversible. The administration of Chloramphenicol can favour the devetopmert of non-sensitive micro-organisms, par-tiojlarly Candida.
