Indications:
1 Infections of respiratory tract due to S.pneumoniae, S.pyogenes and most strains of H.influenzae.
2 Meningitis due to N.meningitidis,S.penumoniae,H.influenzae & Listeria mono cytogenes.
3 Infections of Urinary Tract caused by E.coil, P.mirabilis,Enterococci, Shigella, S.typhosa and other Salmonella species.
4 Gonorrhoea
5 Bacterial endocarditis caused by Streptococcus viridans or Enterococci.
6 Prophylaxix of bacterial endocarditis.
7 Prophylaxis of surgical infections.
Contra-indications: A history of allergic reaction to any of the penicillins and infections caused by penicillinase producing organisms are contraindication.
Adverse Reactions: As with other Penicillins, it may be expected that untoward reactions will be essentially limited to sensitivity phenomena,They are more likely to occur in individuals who have previously demonstrated hypersensitivity to Penicillins and in those with a history of allergy, asthma, hay fever or urticaria. The following adverse reactions have been reported as associated with the use of Penicillins:
Gastrointestinal: glossitis, stomatitis, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, enterocolitis, and pseudomembranous colitis. These reactions are usually associated with oral dosage forms of the drug. Hypersensitivity: occurance of an erythematous, mildly pruritic; maculopapular skin rash has been reported.
Precautions: As with any potent drug, periodic assessment of renal, hepatic and hematopoietic function should be made during prolonged therapy. The possibility of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens should be kept in mind during therapy. If superinfections occur(ususally involving Enterobacter, Pseudomonas or Candida), the drug should be discontinued and/or appropriate therapy instituted. Cases of gonorrhoea with a suspected lesion of syphilis should be thoroughly investigated and appropriately treated.
Dosage And Administration: CAPSULES and SUSPENSION to be administered orally. Adults :250 mg-500 mg four times daily. Children :125 mg-250 mg four times daily.
